The Importance of Prevention

Preventive dentistry includes comprehensive dental exams and teeth cleanings at our Portland dental office twice a year. By seeing you regularly, Dr. Brown can easily find and treat problems like small cavities and gum disease in their earliest stages.

Dental Exams

Our Portland dentist recommends dental exams every six months because they help us to stay up-to-date with your oral health. During these appointments, we carefully check each tooth for signs of decay and look for evidence of gum disease.

We want you to feel fully informed and confident about the treatment we recommend, so we use technology like digital x-rays and intraoral cameras. They not only help us diagnose dental conditions, but they also let you see what we see and better understand the need for treatment.

If we find that you need treatment to get your oral health back up to par, we will work with you to develop an individualized plan to ensure that we meet all your needs.

Teeth Cleaning Appointments

Gum disease is a widespread problem affecting half of all US adults over the age of 30. It can exist without your knowledge, but all the while, it is damaging your oral health. Routine hygiene appointments are crucial because we can find and treat gum disease early on, and long before it threatens your oral health.

Cleaning appointments every six months are fine if you have a healthy smile and no history of dental problems. If yours isn’t, our knowledgeable dental hygienists may recommend more frequent appointments to help you maintain excellent oral health.

Healthy Mouth, Healthy Body

Preventing decay and gum disease doesn’t just benefit your oral health. Every day we learn more about the effect that our oral health has on our general health and wellness. Chronic gum disease has been linked to numerous systemic diseases, including heart and lung disease, diabetes, stroke, dementia, cancer, and pregnancy complications.

We Can’t Wait to Meet Your Family!

I absolutely love going to see them

I had not been to a dentist in about 10 years, before finding Dr Brown. It took some extensive deep cleaning to get me back in shape, but it was all done painlessly.

I now have been seeing her and her great staff every six months, for maybe five years now. Dentists are easy to find, but finding one that truly cares about their patience is just incredible.

I absolutely love going to see them, to me its relaxing and absolutely painless. Like hanging out with friends.

I recommend her and her great staff to anyone!

Frequently Asked Questions

According to the American Dental Association, dental checkups and cleanings should take place every six months. This interval works well for many people, but the fact is that it varies by individual.

The goal of these appointments is for your Portland, OR dentist to be able to stay a step ahead of problems like cavities and gum disease. For those who have a history of excellent oral health and have no ongoing conditions, twice a year is sufficient.

However, patients who have a history of cavities or are dealing with gum disease often require more frequent appointments. It’s always easier to prevent small problems from taking over your oral health than treating them once they do. By seeing you more frequently, we can help you avoid the discomfort and expense associated with more complex issues.

At Vermont Hills Family Dental, we don’t just tell you what you need; we use technology like digital x-rays and intraoral cameras that let you see what our dentist sees. You are an active participant in your dental care, so you can understand why our dentist recommends a specific treatment. When you do, you can make more confident and informed decisions about your oral health care.

If you are due (or overdue) for your next dental exam and hygiene appointment, please call to schedule an appointment at our Portland dental office.

General Dentistry Technology

Digital X-Rays & Digital Sensors

We do everything at Vermont Family Hills Dental with your comfort and safety in mind. We use digital x-rays because they are easy to take and emit significantly less radiation than older film-type x-rays do.

From a clinical perspective, digital x-rays are invaluable diagnostic tools that show us what we can’t see during a visual exam. Cavities often start between teeth or deep inside and can’t be detected visually. Digital x-rays show us everything, including periodontal disease that’s developing below the gumline.

Taking x-rays today is also more comfortable than ever before. Instead of making you bite down on a bulky clip to take the picture, we use flat digital sensors. With rounded corners, they slide easily into your mouth and capture highly-detailed images that we display on your chairside monitor.

Dr. Brown points out areas of concern so you can see them for yourself. Bringing you into the process like this keeps you informed about your oral health needs and helps you understand why treatment is necessary.

Other advantages of digital x-rays are that they are stored securely on our in-house network and are easy to share with specialists or insurance companies. And with no hazardous chemicals needed to process your x-rays, digital x-rays are environmentally friendly.
